Dr Cindy Friedman

PhD Philosophy of Technology (Utrecht University)

MA (University of Pretoria)

Cindy Friedman is a specialist in the ethics of emerging technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence and robotics. She earned her PhD from Utrecht University as part of the internationally recognised Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies (ESDIT) consortium, where her research explored the ethical challenges posed by humanoid robots. Cindy is an active member of the Centre for AI and Digital Policy (based in Washington D.C.), and has also taught extensively within courses on the ethics of technology and AI at both Utrecht University and the University of Pretoria. She combines deep academic expertise with practical training experience, helping organisations navigate the moral complexities of AI with clarity, confidence, and critical insight.

Kristy Claassen

MSc Philosophy, Technology & Society (Twente University)

MDiv (University of Pretoria)

Kristy Claassen is a researcher and lecturer with extensive experience in higher education and academic research, specialising in AI ethics. She holds a masters both in philosophy and theology focussed on technology. She is currently completing her PhD at the University of Twente as part of the Ethics of Socially Disruptive Technologies (ESDIT) consortium. Her research focuses on the intersection of Ubuntu philosophy, moral change and artificial intelligence, bringing African contexts into dialogue with global debates on AI ethics.

DESIGN

This course takes a proactive approach to AI ethics, showing how to embed values like fairness, dignity and accountability into design from the start. Using the EthicEdge Design Cycle™, alongside case studies and hands-on methods such as ethical design sprints and dilemma labs, participants learn to shape AI systems that are responsible, sustainable and human-centred.
